8 Reasons Why Having A Dog In New England Is Awesome

Given the time, space, and finances, I’d recommend a dog to just about everyone. From hounds that are homebodies to pups that love playing, there are so many different dogs to match virtually any personality or lifestyle. (And then, of course, there’s cat people – just kidding!)

Lucky for us, we Northerners are especially suited for life with canine companions. Here are 8 reasons why having a dog in New England is especially awesome.

1. They make the best running / hiking / exploration buddies.

New England is the best place to enjoy the great outdoors. With tons of mountains, trails, and beaches, you and your pup will have countless places to explore together. Is running more your thing? There’s no better trainer than a four-legged jogging buddy!

2. They give us a reason to enjoy the outdoors – any time of year.

When the chilly gray days seem to drag on and on, sometimes the best thing to do is bundle up and get outside. Even when the temperature dips, a little fresh air and vitamin D can really boost your mood. Having a dog that needs a walk every day gives you a reason to get up and go, snow or shine. When you finally leave the house and see how happy you’ve made your pup, you may be surprised at how much you enjoy the outing, too!

3. Every season brings new adventures.

As temperatures turn, there’s something exciting about seeing the change in season through the eyes of your dog. From dashing through the snow to frolicking in the leaves, to unearthing new smells once the ground thaws, your dog’s eager sense of adventure makes the change of seasons feel extra exciting.

4. They keep us warm in the cold months.

If you live in New England, you know that there are more cold months than warm… and heating the house can be quite costly. Want a personal, furry space heater that won’t pose a fire hazard? Keep your pup by your side, and you’ll both stay toasty and warm.

5. There’s no shortage of water for dogs who love to swim.

Ocean, lake, or pool, any water-loving pup would love splashing and swimming in New England’s many water sources! Of course, wandering dogs should be kept on a line (especially in the ocean), and they should only be on beaches during times when it’s permitted.

6. Our towns have become increasingly dog-friendly.

More and more, dogs are considered four-legged family members rather than pets, so it’s only natural that they’re allowed in more places. From pup-permitting shopping centers to bars that welcome our barking buddies, New England is right on board with the dog-friendly craze.

7. Cold weather breeds are in Heaven during our long winters.

If you’ve always wanted a Husky, Saint Bernard, Newfie, or any other dog that’s bred for cold weather, they’ll prosper in the snowy winters that New England is known for! If you’ve got your eye on a big, fluffy breed or mutt, the North is a great place to give him a home. Just make sure you have a fenced-in yard so they can safely play in the snow all day – or prepare to spend most of your winter outdoors!

More of a “small-dog” person? You can enjoy buying your pup a wardrobe of coats and sweaters to keep her toasty during the cold season!

8. Rescuing dogs gives you bragging rights.

One of the better “trends” to sweep the nation is to adopt dogs from shelters or rescues rather than buying from breeders. Every year, 1.2 million dogs get euthanized every year due to overcrowding in shelters. Caring animal lovers everywhere try to do their part to decrease this staggering statistic by adopting shelter pets that need homes.

That’s why rescuing has become something of a novelty – you’re effectively saving a life. New Englanders know and appreciate the importance of rescue, and everyone you meet around these parts will be eager to hear your dog’s story. Anyone who’s walked into a shelter and looked into a dog’s eyes knows: when you give a pup a home, you give him the best gift in the world.

6 Things To Do With Your Dog In New England This Winter

When the seasons change, so do our options for fun! But one thing remains the same: everything is about ten times better when you can do it with your dog.

If you live in New England, wintertime is almost guaranteed to bring snow. So whether you love bundling up and playing in it or you’d rather take refuge indoors, here are 6 activities you can do with your dog during those long, cold winter months!

1. Go to holiday tree lightings.

Since these are usually outside, festive tree lightings in local centers and parks are great places to take friendly canines. If your pup is a people-lover, he’ll enjoy being part of the hustle and bustle.

2. Tour the neighborhood decorations from your car.

Whether your dog is shy in crowds or you just don’t feel like braving the cold, take your own tour of your twinkling home town from the warmth and comfort of your car. Swing by a Starbucks or Dunkin’ Donuts drive-thru for some hot chocolate (for  you), and a pupuccino for the pooch!

3. Go shopping.

Did you know that most of the retail stores in Freeport, ME are dog-friendly?! It’s always safest to call ahead just to make sure. Check out this article to see which stores Luna has recently visited! Not from Maine? There may be a dog-friendly shopping center near you. If not, stop by the nearest pet store – your pup will appreciate the outing.

4. Hunker down in a dog-friendly bar or brewery.

There are a few hidden gems in New England that allow dogs to accompany their humans when they stop in for a drink. Bars that let dogs through their doors include The Snug in Portland, ME and Grendel’s Den in Cambridge, MA. Several New England breweries also allow pups, including Rising Tide and Bissell Brothers in Portland, ME, Magic Hat Brewery in South Burlington, VT, Tree House Brewing Company in Monson, MA, and The Beer’d Brewing Company in Stonington, CT. (Check out Dogs On Tap for more!)

5. Go to an indoor dog park.

Yes, these do exist! In fact, there are several in New England. Take your pooch to an indoor pooch paradise that’s full of obstacles, toys, friends…and astroturf! Some nearby indoor dog parks include All Dogs Gym & Inn in Manchester, NH, The Natural Paw in Ipswich, MA, and Paw Prints Indoor Dog Park in Hampton Falls, NH.

6. Take a hike.

Just because it’s cold doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy your favorite trails! In fact, a snow-lined path makes for some beautiful scenery that you and your dog will both enjoy. So suit up, grab your pooch, and head outdoors!

Dog-Friendly: Downtown Freeport, Maine

Downtown Freeport is known for its outlet shopping, and of course, the flagship store of L.L. Bean. But what’s less known is that the area is incredibly dog-friendly!

Summer isn’t the only time you can meander downtown with your dog, stopping for a beer or a burger on a restaurant patio. As it turns out, most of the retail stores are dog-friendly, too!

This is something that I recently learned, and it’s not necessarily public knowledge. That’s because many of the stores chains aren’t usually dog-friendly, but the Freeport locations make exceptions. Obviously, it’s always wise to call ahead, just in case.

Establishments that sell food generally don’t allow pets (unless they’re service animals, of course). Unfortunately, this includes L.L. Bean, presumably because of its cafe. But the flagship store’s sprawling campus is a great place to walk your pup around, and you’ll get to view some of Freeport’s best light-decorated trees in the winter. Plus, you and your pooch can pose by “the big boot.”

Since lots of places welcome canines indoors, you can do your Christmas shopping with your companion by your side. Or better yet, bring him along for moral support when you have to do your obligatory “jean shopping”…

Personally, I’ve visited The North Face, American Eagle, J. Crew, Old Navy, Gap, and Nike with Luna in tow. Other stores that allow dogs – according to Instagram – include Ralph Lauren and Mexicali Blues.

I know there are others, I just haven’t asked specifically. So next time you’re in Freeport, call your favorite stores and ask if you can bring your dog along – there’s a good chance they’ll say “yes”!
